Boundaries: What They Are and Why They Matter

Understanding Boundaries: Your Personal Operating Manual

Today we’re focusing on what boundaries actually are and why they’re essential, especially for those with ADHD or codependent tendencies.

**What Are Boundaries, Really?**

Boundaries aren’t walls to keep people out – they’re clear guidelines about:

– How you want to be treated

– What behaviors you will and won’t accept

– How you’ll respond when your limits are crossed

– What you need to feel safe and respected

**Types of Boundaries:**

– **Physical:** Personal space, touch, privacy

– **Emotional:** Protecting your emotional energy, limiting exposure to others’ emotional demands

– **Time:** How you allocate your time and attention

– **Material:** Your possessions, money, and resources

– **Mental:** Your thoughts, values, and opinions

**Why Boundaries Are Crucial with ADHD:**

With ADHD, you may:

– Become easily overwhelmed by sensory and social input

– Have limited “people energy” that depletes faster than others realize

– Need more downtime to process experiences

– Struggle with time management that makes overcommitment likely

Without clear boundaries, these challenges can lead to burnout, resentment, and damaged relationships.

**Common Boundary Myths:**

– “Setting boundaries means I’m selfish”

– “If I set boundaries, people won’t like me anymore”

– “I don’t deserve to have boundaries”

– “Setting boundaries will hurt others”

**Reflection Exercise:**

Think about a recent situation where you felt drained, resentful, or taken advantage of. What boundary might have protected you in that situation? What stopped you from establishing that boundary?

Next time, we’ll examine how ADHD specifically impacts boundary-setting and what strategies can help.
